The lenses are very good! All in all I’m glad I’m aboard the Nikon camp! I’m considering a similar switch from my 5N. Thanks for your comments, they give me perspective. If you had switched to the Sony a77ii you would have seen an improvement in image quality over the original a You should keep your Sony lenses and someday maybe the a77ii will be sold at a lower price than now. I also own a NIkon and it’s very nice but it doesn’t have the electronic viewfinder or in-body stabilization, both of which I’m hooked on.

But in my experience the Nikon might take just very slightly better quality photos. I’m talking pixel peeping here. But I enjoy the Sony more and consider it my main camera. Incredibly light. Really nice images. Carry it with me all day without fatigue. Why did I ever own an expensive, heavier camera before? This one is my favorite ever. I use jpeg only. These are very nice. I do modify them slightly with post processing which makes them even better.

I think the plastic body is a huge advantage. The camera will always be with you when it is not heavy. The grip is perfect for my large paws. DXO recently analyzed and scored D sensor. It has This is totally new for a cheapest crop sensor camera, outperforming high-end most expensive full frame cameras. This is a great shame for heavy FF cameras with fancy names. I wonder how incredible will be Nikon D, we will see. Yes, it does. It is not very serious, but it is there. I am not sure as to why Nikon bothered with this “upgrade” but at least they didn’t need to retool.

Here is a tip for Nikon engineers for next gen Nikon D remove flash who wants a thing that makes pictures flat and sucks up battery; and add some awesome creative modes like “Fine art mode” it could use ISO and some heavy noise reduction to imitate the paint brush look or “Chinese food mode”, essential for everyone, who eats noodles and rice :D. I can’t imagine why anyone would NOT necessarily want a built-in flash.

I hate how flashes can make pics look unnatural but they can still come in handy even when outdoors to fill in shadows. Some of us don’t need to buy an expensive Speed Flash, especially if most of our shots don’t need a flash.

Also, your point about it eating up battery as a reason why the flash shouldn’t be built-in is complete nonsense. I don’t think many people are going to be using a built-in flash for every pic they take.

So very, limited for fill in. None of my cameras have it and I do not miss it. Built-in flash is great for macro with home-made diffusers.

My diffuser gives better results with built-in flash than my dedicated Nissin macro flash. Macro flashes give ring shaped images on spiders eyes, which ruin great shots.

Macro flashes are too heavy to hold still for hand-held macro work. Built-in flashes are weightless and very usefull for macro. I can see that it might work on a 50mm, but I doubt it works with longer lenses. In 2 years I owned a 7DII the only time I popped the flash is when I dropped the camera once: it popped out on impact.

I use 40 and mikro Nikkor lenses. My diffusers work with both of them perfectly. However with more power is needed, drains battery fast. I also have very cheap chinese two small flat flashes that I got from aliexpress which work with my diffusers. My nissin macro flash works well but puts stupid halos on every shiny surface which does not look natural.

Flash is also necessary to stop motion to get razor sharp insect eyes. Marty CL A week into owning a 7DII: it came off my spider holster while shooting from a lower position, while rolling the flash popped out and bent out of shape.

You sound so ridiculous. You do realize that dropping your camera can also damage the lens, the reflex mirror, the OVF and other things. You know why? Anything can get damaged on impact.

Complainers are the amateurs that they see their toy to be removed. I am blaming no one. You are no pro obviously given your observations. Pros often value “the shot” more than their gear, that is why cannot be flimsy. Pros drive their gear hard, if you think that care and attention of the gear overcomes their purpose, that tell everything about you as a photog.

Studio scene comparison with the D shows the new camera has the default jpeg sharpness and contrast or the “clarity” setting? The Adobe raw conversions are much closer but the D is fractionally sharper. Behind some minor tweaking though it looks like the same output to me. If the D is better its not something I’m gonna lose sleep over. Cam lives on – Sheesh, it debuted in the D 11 years ago!!

We didn’t forget to mention it- it’s a fantastic feature but we didn’t focus too heavily on that camera because it’s quite a bit more expensive. The full K70 review should be up fairly soon. Why did I do this? For 2 reasons. I always read the entire manual and learn every single feature of tech products I buy, but more importantly I tried the AUTO feature when I first took it out of the box and quickly switched it to P, M or any of the other modes, My D hasn’t seen the light of AUTO since it was shipped to me. Don’t get a nikon for any video. They still have old style autofocus in video – which isn’t good. I have a Sony A for video auto focus needs. The Canon DP is fine too but the Sony focuses in video quicker.

Could you get a picture of God for me please? I’m starting a magazine ‘God Monthly’ and I need something for the cover shot. Incredible how much better than this camera are some old and discontinued products, such as 2 years old samsung nx I think Nikon took a step backwards with the D Older, yes, but at least they kept features like the built-in sensor cleaning probably took that out to save on costs.

I don’t see much of a compelling reason other than battery life to get the D, and I’m a Nikon fan. But battery life deficiencies in other entry-level DSLRs can be overcame by just buying a spare battery, so really I don’t see much of a compelling reason to run out and get a D, other than for bragging rights of having the latest entry-level DSLR which to me, is not a reason at all.

D has the same sharpness as D at ISO. If they used D sensor it would be much better. I use D with 40 mm Mikro Nikkor for hand held macro, it is so lightweight, I can shoot hand held. I have D too with Micro Nikkor, impossible to shoot hand held. This cam is very usefull hor macro. Sharpness is a function of sensor size bec of diffraction.

Did you ever hear about diffraction before? Endofoto: The D sensor is of the same size and essentially the same pixel density as the D and D Thus, diffraction is a non-factor. The D sensor does, on the other hand, have no AA filter and will thus be a wee bit sharper than any of the others mentioned.

It also has wonderful dynamic range and high ISO noise characteristics, having eliminate the nasty banding in deep shadow of the D Your sarcasm was not warranted for the argument you made. Red Fox’s supposition that the lens matters more is quite true. JEPG settings are, not all that important since you can shoot RAW and get even more acuity, owing to the lack of jpeg NR smearing and compression blocking.

All in all, I agree with you that it would have been nice to see the D sensor in the D I did not mean to offend anybody, but just wanted to attract attention to diffraction, which is the most important problem at higher f points. For macro and landscapes f16 or higher is mostly needed. Thats where diffraction begins.

In FF sensor diffraction is less observed bec sensor points are farther from each other. Pentax is putting high end sensor and weather sealing to their cheapest cams, which will affect market sales. However people buying low end cams dont know SLR tech and buy just asking salespersons which mannipulate the knowledge intentionally.

So they r thinking beginners don’t ever need to change lens in an interchangeable lens camera category? There is a disconnect between the superb IQ and solid feeling grip and good in hand feel of entry level cameras like the D and T6 and the almost condescending tone of these reviews.

I have an Olympus EM10, the kind that these reviewers seem to drool over, and frankly, it does not compete well with the IQ of this D and it doesn’t feel as good anywhere near as good in the hand.

But it’s mostly metal, has a flippy screen, and makes for good Flickr camera porn photos. Big deal. DPR should remember why the D series is a best seller for Nikon. They are inexpensive, reasonably well made, F-mount and they produce great looking image and video files. For the price this camera is a no brainer, although more advanced users would be better off with the D or similar.

Condescending tone? I’m having an extremely hard time understanding where you’re drawing that conclusion from. The D is an excellent camera, with excellent IQ but it does have its limitations. You’re correct in saying that this camera is a big seller for Nikon, which is why we need to objective and thorough in regard to how it performs against its peers.

There’s more to a camera than great IQ. A voice of reason. If maximum image quality for the dollar is important, this is one of a short list of cameras you’ll want to look at.

Anything in between is dying. IQ is not everything, if an enthusiast outgrows the feature set of the offering too quickly they will skip it and invest immediately on a better specified product. We need to take into account how the D fits into today’s market in terms of build quality, AF, video etc. The camera performs well in some categories and doesn’t in others. I could see where you’re coming from for IQ. I feel that APSC is the only substantial upgrade without costing too much from a smartphone camera.

The only thing I don’t agree with DPR’s review is with the external controls. It is just fine for either beginner or advanced users. Beginners don’t need more while the advanced users shoot RAW. Exposure compensation is enough for me. Nitpicking again, resolving ability is poor for a device this big while flagship smartphones can do so many things with a large high quality screen.

Chris M Williams If the D gets a Silver award, and the D is an improved version of that award winning camera, then no the review was not fair. The D is class leading in terms of IQ, features, and the build quality is the same as the award winning D and the current entry level market. The Canon T6 uses the camera subpar 18 mp sensor from 8 years ago, the D has p60 video.

It’s not like you needed to do anything special to produce the images in the D review sample gallery. No, as an entry level camera it performs as well or better than any similarly priced camera on the market. No offense, but to give such a short review and no award was a disservice to your readers and, no offense, it seemed unnecessarily harsh.

Anyway, thanks. The AF in live-view has improved thanks to the focusing motors in the lenses, not the AF system in the camera itself. The D still has the same limited, albeit efficient, AF system as the D The changes that were present in the D just didn’t warrant an award. Thanks for reading the review.

I think we will just have to agree to disagree. The fact that the D improves over the D does not mean much in absolute terms. With respect to the “cheap” body, companies like Pentax are pushing the envelope in terms of what consumers expect at this price point.

As we see more and cheaper weather-sealed entry level bodies, what may have been acceptable at the time the D was released is markedly less acceptable now. The author also did a good job of explicitly noting how cheaper full frame offerings from Sony and Pentax have again pushed the envelope in terms of what a consumer should expect at this price point, further supporting their final conclusion.

TL;DR, technology and the market moved forward, Nikon did not. Hence, the lower score compared to essentially the camera from two years ago. I had a D and then bought a D to get the touch screen so I could make adjustments faster. I am not that price sensitive and would have paid more for the Oly or the Fuji if I liked them better. The was just too much bigger for me. My point, I like these cameras a lot.

They give very good results for little money. I much prefer the touch screen though. I have watched it twice. It is in my opinion a very good piece of camera journalism. Calling Tony a troll is insulting for no reason.

In my experience he and his wife put a huge amount of work into making those videos that are available for free. I have used both their Lightroom and Photoshop books and they are excellent. Again, IMHO. B Bob for sure Bob, marike6 was so off in terms of content and tone that I did not even bother paying attention or replying to his argument.

Kind of strong of tone Nikon’s biggest issue with the D is removing useful features. Always bad optics. It’s a very complex camera, so we want to ensure that we are giving it a thorough and objective review.

We are hoping to publish it this week. Fuji isn’t done finishing up their firmware. They’re still adding in stuff that should have been there at launch. Why even bother reviewing this camera? More to point, why spend 4 pages on this camera? A single sentence can describe this camera Same as the D but without sensor dust removal, a worse flash which probably accounts for the better battery life , and connectivity options that nobody will use.

Writing a review about this camera is important because Nikon will still sell a huge number of them. Potential buyers should be aware of the camera’s limitations and the other options that are available to them when making a decision about what camera is the best fit for their needs.

Why do I think Nikon will survive along with Canon, They still have the best systems for stills. Long battery life, OVF, many many lenses.

I would guess that unless things change dramatically that Olympus and Fuji may be in trouble on their still cameras.

This is even though I have loved Oly cameras for decades. Oly just sticks with that small sensor and that is a mistake. Go big Oly. I don’t want to sound arrogant, but i completely disagree with you, dslrs are the past, theres no way back, it will be used on niche events like film photography is used today, like a hipster thing.

Film still today has better colors in my opinion, but theres no coming back, dslrs ovf has no lag, but they are faded to sports only until the evf tech be so good that we will not be able to perceive the diference.

The D is a no nonsense budget shooter with excellent IQ and a solid feature set. It may not have all of the higher end features of the Pentax K You are right, it does have “way more lenses” Nikon and Canon have an abysmal DX lens lineup and Nikon just keeps reiterating the cheap convenience zooms over and over.

String Nikon has 30 DX lenses Canon has 19 , more than any other brand, and total lenses. The idea of buying lenses that cover only APS-C is unwise from an upgrade path perspective. Other than wides and ultra wides, there is zero reason to prefer DX lenses over FF lenses.

Probably a lot. Canon had had at least 4 different ef-s kit lenses each newer one replacing the older one either for image quality improved or build quality decreased cost to construct. A kit lens that doesn’t even come close to exploiting the sensor. The seems like a better overall package. The sensor and the kit lens is an oxymoron. I discovered a few weeks back after I purchased a d with the kit. The only lens to bring out the resolving the capability is to use the Sigma mm which is twice as large and costs twice as the camera. In the end, the solution is a fixed prime lens.

I hope to see a Coolpix A with the sensor this year. Only problem is, when looking for a prime with the same resolving power, you’ll also be looking at equal the camera’s price or more. These two cameras are very similar. I like landscape, wildlife and macro photography. I have a 3oomm f4 prime lens which I love using. Imaging results will be very similar between the D and D The main difference is handling: the has a larger viewfinder and more direct control, and is bigger.

The has the flippy screen and more menu-driven interface. It really depends on which of these things matter most to you. Be careful that the lenses you have will autofocus on the or series bodies. The G series will. I do not think that the D series lenses will autofocus on the D or D series. Although I own a , I think you might be better with the less expensive and use the money towards good quality lenses. Every few years you are likely to trade up your camera body anyways.

Ignoring that I wish the had the fully articulated LCD. I never have much luck using liveview without my little Hoodman viewer. And to get really sharp landscape photos I try and use the liveview. I chose the because I came from a so the was an easy choice for me.

Don’t misunderstand me I really like the and chose it over going with a D because the FX lenses I have are fantastic on the DX body. You don’t mention it but if you care about video the is supposed to have better quality. Hope this helps. Unless I’m hallucinating, there seems to be a noticeable difference between the and the in terms of high ISO noise in RAW images, with the D being cleaner. I did not expect to see this, and I’m seriously considering the based on it.

Too late to edit, but I realized that the high ISO noise difference in these older tests is nowhere near as obvious as is the “new” studio scene comparison, and that’s against the D here, not the D Like A Ahearn, I too can’t believe a flip-out screen has gone. I use mine on the D frequently even though its placement is different from subsequent Nikon models. I had to giggle at dpreview’s ‘amazement’ at the use of an i button.

Am I missing something? My D has this. What’s so WOW about it being on the D? I use it for nature, flower photography and shooting action such as Polo games. The lens focuses well for me in all situations.

Highly recommend it. Can anyone recommend the best lens for the nikon D I am comparing the nikon to the canon EOS 70D What do you want to do? I have a couple of lenses for my D, my cousin recommended a Sigma mm Macro lens which is great for every day shooting, no real need to swap it this one.

And I finally have a good little prime 50mm FX which is a bargain for the price, forget the 1. I also have the mm Nikon Macro FX 2.

I think with the top 2 you wont go far wrong for most of your photography but its down to what you enjoy taking photo’s of. I have a Nikon D, looking for upgrading to either D or a D Let me know how is D :. I bought a Nikon D in the summer of I bought this camera and Nikkor lenses to take with me to Africa. On my very first safari the camera malfunctioned the focus was not working, manual or auto.

And so I shipped it back to Nikon for repair. I got it back in December! And was still having focus issues. So I called, I wrote to Nikon, I tried everything only to be told to send it back in again for repairs. I received it back again in July. I came back to the US for my sisters wedding with my camera.

They looked at it and told me it appeared the focus issue had been fixed, however, the mount for the lenses was too tight and could cause issues with glass and mirrors and so I should send my camera in AGAIN for repairs. I would seriously consider a different camera manufacturer, one with better customer service and support. How does the D have anything to do with the lens focusing in manual mode? You sent the camera body back in again for focus issues in December?

Now the mount is too tight? You should elaborate more on your trials and your timeline provided because your story being told has way too many holes for me to take seriously. I agree Nikon Customer Service is suspect but that’s a common issue and widely known, talking to their reps is an experience but what you describe sounds suspect in rating the D and sounds like the lens I am new here and looking because I have had focusing issues with my Nikon D since day 1.

I thought it was me, as it was a big step up from my D40x. I read books, watched You-tube videos etc. I spoke to a friend who had the same issue and she purchased this a as a backup camera.

She ended up returning hers for credit at Nikon. I am at a loss. I am sending my back today after speaking to the Nikon representative for repair. At ISO my photos are very noisy.

My D changes focus randomly. It also changes the settings randomly on how many focus points I want to use. I just keep reading positive reviews on the camera and think what is going on with mine? My little D40x took such crisp photos. I hope the problem is fixed and I think you can’t understand that this is happening unless it happens to you.

Using live view while taking photos really slows the camera down with focusing, taking the picture, and displaying the picture after. The viewfinder has an exposure indicator within it. When you look through the viewfinder, it tells you if the shot will be according to the meter on whatever you happen to be exposing off of will be exposed properly or not.

A point and shoot is probably where you want to be looking. Basically what I’m saying is that I don’t notice it ever, because I’m never in live view.

I use liveview a lot with a D when using a mm manual focus lens and tripod. It’s ‘OK’ takes some practice and zooming in and Ihave to use a Hoodman to view. The D is known to have a comparatively poor screen and the new D is upgraded to the same screen as the D I think and so should be far better. I find liveview invaluable for low ground shots of fungi and things especially with my flip out screen And I certainly can’t get down there that easily these days. I wouldn’t use it for BIF though! Im thinking about buying this camera for Landscape Photography and im having trouble choosing lenses. I just purchased this Camera d, been using the Nikon D for almost a year.

Sharp photos Great colors still. I also use a Sigma Lens on this camera All work Great. You can Also rent some glass to try out too! Have fun! Although in the normal to short telephoto range, you might get decent images, but you would not be getting full benefit of the high quality resolution capabilities of the D If your budget could afford it, adding the excellent Nikon mm VR I or II will blow your mind at the image quality available. My wife has the D and was using the Nikon mm lens.

She now has a Sigma mm ART lens I know it’s full frame and the combination of that lens and the D is superb. Why would it not be compatible? My Nikkor 50mm f1. Lens choice is highly subjective period, all you will get is opinion regarding ones personal taste and as if that’s fact to everyone Zooms are the worst at this; you may like 18mm and the guy 30mm and the next mm all 3 of you will have subjective opinions on that matter alone.

I suggest you search image results I want to hear some bs just ask anyone a question about the gear they are using and you’ll get plenty. The proof in the pudding is in the results the camera delivers not from the mouth of the user. The is a good all purpose lens. If you are really limiting to Landscape I would suggest either the Sigma or the Tokina both are 2. I bought a VR in with D Allot of the photos were on a tripod, MUP with a remote trigger so they should have come out very sharp but were no where close to being crisp.

Lenses that try to do everything do nothing well. Of coarse it depends on what your idea of image quality is. My experience with the mmVr matches what the reviews say. There are allot of used mmVR lenses out there for sale fairly cheap which tells you something. I don’t own one but from what I’ve seen the mmVR gives allot better sharper photos at the cost of less reach. My normal camera is a D which I shoot very quick powersports with, I decided to upgrage, bought the D Used same settings as my and almost all photos were out of focus!

I’m hearing the may have a focus problem, so here’s my question Is this good for fast sports? I’m talking auto racing, jet ski races, boat races, motorcycles? Even when I took photos of my dogs, they weren’t as crisp and clear as I think they should be. I’m a little lost and could use all the input I could get. I refuse to go to a Canon so i’m hoping I can get an upgrade for Nikon. I’ve gotten great results with my D shooting motorcycle and auto races. In Fine jpg only, you can fire away in bursts with no problem.

I’ll be shooting an Indy car test session tomorrow with it, and I’ll post again when I see the results. So far, the D is doing an outstanding job. I’ve seen very few negative reviews on the camera, and lots of very positive reviews, many calling it the best DX camera, ever. I know this review has been out there for some time now but I don’t see any evidence of “banding” in the samples provided above when increasing the exposure or increasing the brightness in LR.

That really puzzles me, because I can create the “banding” issue in almost every one of my D images when increasing the exposure or increasing the brightness. I could not have saved those from the D even in RAW, because it clipped too hard at both ends It would also have ‘hunted’ focus in that situation. I primarily shoot my kids sports events and I capture in raw and not jpg. I have a fast SD card and I set the color depth to 12bit, that gives me good enough burst when I need it without overrunning the buffer. I don’t like to do burst much anyhow, so the shallow buffer hasn’t been an issue for me.

Those of us Who want or need that next step above the D have long since migrated to FX. Birders and Macro photographers are probably at least 2 groups that would like a pro dx. Speed , deep buffer and a rugged body for the elements. To get equivalent FOV glass you need to be wealthy or take out a 2nd mortgage to afford them.

I have dx and fx and they each have their purpose. Birders and macro shooters should understand that a smaller sensor just makes a smaller crop of a larger image, whatever that image is.

No enlargement occurs. The bird is the same size on a crop sensor as on FX. There’s just less space around him. The crop sensor just could maybe help you put more pixels on the target. I’d rather have all the advantages of FX, then crop after the fact, if I need to do so. But that is exactly the advantage of DX. They use much more pixels for the same FOV, which lets you print larger prints – so there is a zoom factor as long as the pixel density on DX is higher than that on FX.

Why not a D? The 39pt versus 51pt IS very noticeable. The DS I came from toasted the D in low light focusing. I had a D for a little while, but it was too valuable expensive to take everywhere. I ended up with the D It wasn’t my first choice, but for the money refurbished I couldn’t be happier with it. Just upgraded to the D from the D I’m finding it a very capable camera, so far. Could someone tell me if there is somewhere to increase the sharpness in camera? I was sure the D had that option somewhere.

I do allot of landscape photography with a D I’m on my second one and find that increasing sharpening in the camera at more than 3 gives a bad effect. Sharpening later with software is a vast improvement. Check out both ways yourself and see the results at percent.

My D, bought last May, is fantastic. Together with the , it is incredible. The dynamic range compared with my D is a major upgrade. Photos of a play with spotlights and much dark areas, were wonderful in edited RAW. Used exposure with center weighted aimed at bright area. Unedited, the dark was very dark, but in PS the shadows opened up perfectly. This increased dynamic range is clearly a remarkable advance.
